Mission and Goals

Academician Nikola Hajdin, president of SASA"Our people are very good at technical skills but not all of them are able to deal with management and business organization, or create a proper tender.... although some of them are familiar with the mentioned skills, actually – the best among them..."

Nikola HAJDIN,academician, President of SANU, March 2006

The Construction Management Program provides basic knowledge and skills to lead and manage the design and construction process from concept to completion. The program offers benchmarks for the students, creating a generation of construction management professionals equipped with the proper tools for the real world.
Students in the construction management program are taught the process of designing, planning, communicating, team-building, managing and delivering the construction project. This is achieved through hands-on experience and state-of-the-art courses such as management of costs, quality, risk, and time as well as development of analytical and communication skills.

Apart from acquiring necessary knowledge of engineering skills, these programs offer the knowledge and skills regarding various scientific and professional fields needed for understanding and dealing with complex processes of modern construction management (technology and construction organization, planning, tender procedures within civil construction, making contracts, managing and monitoring the process of construction).

The educational mission of the Faculty is to join the latest teaching processes that require certain changes within structure and quality of study programs and plans as well as in relationship between professors and students. As a result, the academic studies «Civil Construction Management» were formed in order to focus on construction project realization. The Program intended for getting MBA Degree (Master of Business Administration) offers one of the most appreciated qualifications within business world.

The philosophy of the Program is to offer the knowledge and skills needed for meeting the changing needs of the construction industry as well as the process of globalization.

The classical type of MBA program regards business administration, that is – management, to be an independent discipline that can be applied within all kinds of industry; yet, it cannot be applied within civil construction because of the fact that it is significantly different from other industries. The construction product (object) is always located at the same place, even after the production process has finished, and that's why a special academic program was formed - "MBA in Construction". This multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary academic program resulted from thorough analyses and cooperation between the experts of construction practice. The goal is to offer new, modern and integration-directed academic studies.

The latest study programs of the Faculty incorporate all the necessary aspects of civil engineering, civil construction, architecture and civil construction management.

MISSION

The mission of the Program studies of our three departments, Construction Management, Structural Engineering and Architecture, is to provide the student with both the education and work experience to enter the construction profession as a productive team member with the potential to become an innovative technical problem-solver and industry leader. The philosophy of the program is to offer a curriculum which emphasizes instruction that challenges, shapes and encourages students to think about and apply their expanding technical knowledge and organizational skills to the solution of contemporary problems. This philosophy is supported by the educational mission of the Institute that emphasizes physics and mathematics, both theoretical and applied the humanities and social sciences, communication skills and computer science. Students are prepared through their educational experience to adapt to changes in society, technology and the profession.

GOALS

Our goals are directed toward creating contemporary first-rate experts dealing with construction organization and technology as well as planning, monitoring and realizing the process of construction. The primary goal is to provide a learning environment and curriculum which produces graduates that understand the total construction process from concept through completion including the roles of the owner, designer and constructor.
The goals of the Construction Management program are several:

  • Leadership: To graduate entry-level construction professionals who have the potential to grow in their positions and assume leadership roles within the construction industry.
  • Communication: To produce graduates that meet industry expectations and standards for the communicative ability of construction professionals.
  • Theory and Practice: To maintain a balance of theory and practice with the combination of classroom, laboratory and work experience, plus the role of the faculty as teachers and practicing professionals.
  • The Construction Process: To provide a learning environment and curriculum which produces graduates that understand the total construction process from concept through completion including the roles of the owner, the designer and the constructor.
  • Interpersonal Skills and Social Awareness: To foster a climate both within the Construction Management Program and the Institute at large that is supportive of educating the “whole person”. This recognizes that future construction professionals should have an education that not only provides technical skills but also promotes an awareness of social issues, an understanding of human behavior and a commitment to intellectual pursuits.
  • Ethics: To provide a learning environment and curriculum that fosters professionalism, integrity and high ethical standards.
  • Experiential Learning: To employ a "hands-on" or experiential approach to instruction consistent with the mission of the Institute, recognizing its value as a tool for student motivation and as an effective means for achieving a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts and their application.
  • Facilities: To employ and maintain state-of-the-art instructional facilities that support the Program mission and are responsive to the changing needs of industry.
  • Faculty: To encourage faculty development and creative activity that will provide opportunities for faculty to remain abreast of the latest pedagogical and industry trends and methodologies.
  • Academic Advising: To provide as a framework of instruction, counseling and academic advising that can allow students to pursue their educational and career objectives.
  • Industry Interaction: To establish and maintain strong ties with industry and in particular alumni/ae of the Construction Management Program which will enable today’s professionals to assist in the development of future generations of constructors.

These goals are in accord with those of the Institute, and the Construction Management Program has developed its courses, curricula, faculty, facilities, and liaisons with industry in order to achieve these ends.
